So why isn't "they're" a contraction for "they were" as well?

From an alphanumeric addition standpoint it still fits...ugh I don't like this.

I can say "they're going to the mall" but if if their plans change? "they were going to the mall" I want a past tense of "they'r" #forgetworldpeace #fixthisfirst
